Atlanta Falcons

About the Atlanta Falcons

Joining the National Football League as an expansion team in 1965, the Atlanta Falcons are a member of the NFC. The team has won division championships in 1980, 1998, and 2004. In 1970, the Falcons participateed in their first ever Monday Night Football game against fellow expansion team the Miami Dolphins and the following year they had both their first televised victory and their first winning season. In 1980, a stellar season for the Falcons would unfortunately come to an end in a devastating 30-27 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional Playoffs. Despite this setback, the Falcons now had their first-ever NFC West division title. A new era was ushered in at the end of the decade when the Falcons drafted “Prime Time” Deion Sanders. Atlanta had their most successful season to date in 1998, as they had a 14-2 regular season record and made their first Super Bowl appearance by defeating the heavily favored Minnesota Vikings in the conference championship game. In 2008 and 2009, the Falcons had consecutive winning seasons for the first time in franchise history.
